Keg spear, keg neck and keg coupler terms

The valve and down tube unit that sits in the keg neck. The keg is filled, cleaned and dispensed through the spear. AOBAOSI makes spears for the A, S, D, G and M systems.

Spear with a round flange Ø 74.5 mm, one valve and a safety system. The bottom clearance is 9 mm. It fits A system couplers.

Sankey spear for the D system with two valves and 14 mm bottom clearance. The standard version is threadless and held in the keg by a retaining ring. A version with a 2″–14 TPI BS 84 external thread is also available.

Lock of the spear which, on the flat spear, connects the body to the down tube. On types A and G, the tip of the triangle on the CO₂ valve points exactly at the line on the body when the system is locked.

Part of the safety lock on the flat spear. If a previous owner has cut it off, the spear is no longer secured. That is why every spear should be treated as if it had no safety lock.

All AOBAOSI spears are tightened to 80 ± 5 Nm; for type D only the threaded version. It is measured with a mounting disc and a ½″ torque wrench.

Empty returned kegs are checked before refilling and retightened to 60 Nm, never under pressure.

The maximum operating pressure of the spears is 3 bar. If heat drives the pressure up sharply, a flat spear gives way at roughly 6 to 10 bar and releases the pressure.

Releasing the pressure through the CO₂ valve until no more gas escapes. This is done immediately before removal, because pressure can build up again within a few hours.

Elastomer of which the CO₂ valve and body seal are made, hardness 81 ± 3 Shore A. In cleaning, the limits for steam, caustic and acid are set by the EPDM, not by the stainless steel.
